Behind-the-Scenes in the Studio: "The Artist"

"The  Artist" - Original Encaustic Painting on Wood Panel

This painting took several stages, and because it is a piece about being an artist, I wanted to share the process with you. The painting started out with an image in my mind of a girl with stars shooting from her hands. It made me think of the process of creativity and song lyric "we are stardust....". As the song played through my mind, I started building this piece. First there was the sketch. Then, I lay down a piece of twine and cut out paper stars to use as relief which I would pull up after laying down my second layer of paint on top of the pretty colors beneath the gray and black final layers. You can get a sense of this process through the pictures below.
